Why don’t we feel pain when we cut our hair or nails?

When we bite the nail out of the skin, there is no pain. But cutting the nails attached to the skin causes pain

Keratin is responsible for the formation of cells in the tissues of the nails and other parts of the body.

The human body is a complex system in which each part and organ has its function. The blood flowing through our body oozes out whenever there is even a small wound involving skin lesions. We feel unbearable pain as soon as we injure ourselves while walking. But when we cut our hair or nails, forget the bleeding, there’s not even pain in the process. Have you wondered why?

If any part of the body is scratched with a sharp object, we start bleeding immediately. We feel pain when we bump into the wall, table, chairs or bed. But there’s a unique reason our nails and hair don’t hurt when we cut them. Nails and strands of hair are made up of dead cells. For this reason, there is no possibility of damaging the cells, since they are already dead. So when we cut these dead cells with scissors, there is no pain or bleeding.

You must have noticed that sometimes when the nail clipper slips and cuts the nail too deeply, you start feeling immense pain. But this is not the case with hair. The reason behind this is that fingernails are made of skin. They contain keratin, a type of protein.

Keratin is responsible for the formation of cells in the tissues of the nails and other parts of the body. When we bite the nail out of the skin, there is no pain. But cutting the nails attached to the skin causes pain. The reason behind this is that there are living cells in the nail adjacent to the skin. It causes pain when the nail attached to the skin is damaged in any form.

Cutting our hair to any length does not cause pain. Even though we use clippers to cut all our hair, we don’t feel any pain. But we feel intense pain when the hair is pulled. The reason is that when we cut the hair, we are not touching or damaging the living cells around the hair follicles. But when we pull the hair, our hair follicles attached to the skin of our head are also pulled and the living cells around the follicle cause us pain because the hair may consist of dead cells but the skin may not.
