MHz Choice launches first-ever series from South Africa

More new crime drama series and retro “Cheeky Business” comedies join the growing list of content for MHz Choice.

WASHINGTON, October 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Dark Family Drama Waterside (Multichoice Studios) is the first series of South Africa (in Afrikaans) for its debut on MHz Choice. The V&A Waterfront at The cap as a magnificent tourist mecca is the setting for the series, which also explores the darker products of decades-long gentrification. The death of the shipbuilding magnate Ben Myburgh (David Minnar) brings his three daughters back to the family business to compete for control of the family empire, dirty secrets, and all.

A pair of crime dramas centered around missing girls will also debut in November. The first one, enemies (GermanyGlobal Screen), comes as a two-part drama about a kidnapped girl told from two different angles: the first part follows the police inspector Peter Nadler (Bjarne Mädel) as he races against time to solve the case, while the second follows the defendant’s defense attorney, Konrad Biegler (Oscar® nominee Klaus Maria Brandauer, Out of Africa), who is determined to save his client. The two films seen together will push viewers on issues of fairness and justice. The promise (FranceNewen) follows the police captain Pierre Castaing (Olivier Marchal) who never recovers from his failed investigation into the disappearance of an eleven-year-old girl in 1999. The case comes back to life years later when Castaing’s daughter (Sofia Essaïdi) investigates a similar disappearance.

For fans of the French mystery series Magellannew Serie Mongeville (FranceMediawan) stars Francois Perrin as retired judge Antoine Mongeville who teams up with a no-nonsense police detective to solve tricky mysteries in Bordeaux.

retro comedy cheeky business (France, Mediawan) will also join the ranks of new series on MHz Choice. Located in the suburbs of Paris in the early 1980s, cheeky business tells the fictional story of the invention of the first messaging service for adults using the Minitel – an online videotext service accessible through the telephone lines of France. Three unlikely friends and students come up with the idea of posing as horny women who message even hornier men on the Minitel network. Pimps and prostitutes are also getting involved as the business goes national. Friendship, rivalry, sex and fake appearances are early hallmarks of what has become the internet age, and they all collide in hilariously funny ways in this fun and addictive series.

Other new series include two Italian female-led crime dramas from ITV Studios: Petrabased on the bestselling novels by Alicia Giménez Bartlett and Voiceless with Cristiana Capotondi as a police inspector Eva Cantini.
