GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Notre Dame and Duke advance to the 2022 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship after Sunday’s first round.
The semi-finals will take place on Thursday, November 3 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Blue Devils take on North Carolina at 5:30 p.m., while the Fighting Irish take on second-seeded Florida State at 8 p.m.
No. 3 Notre Dame 1, No. 6 Pitt 1 (ND leads 5-4 in PK)
Brianna Martinez struck on the fifth and final penalty attempt and sent Notre Dame into the semi-finals for the first time since 2016. It was the first time a penalty shootout was needed to decide a league game in the Premier League. ACC since the 2016 title game.
The Fighting Irish were first on the scoreboard in the 57th minute, when Kiki Van Zanten found the back of the net on a pass from Martinez. Pitt responded quickly in the 70th minute, as Katie Zailski extra time equalized and possibly forced. Note Dame totaled 26 shots for the game including 10 on target.
Notre Dame will now face No. 2 seed Florida State in an Oct. 9 rematch, when the Irish shut out the Seminoles, 4-0, in South Bend.

Kat RaderThe 55th-minute goal proved to be the difference, as Duke won the first surprise ACC championship of the year. The Blue Devils are making their second trip in three seasons to the semi-finals after missing out last year.
Before her winning goal, Rader provided a timely ball to her teammate Michael Cooper, who scored the game’s first goal in the third minute. For Cooper, the goal was his 13th of the season. Virginia responded in the 36th minute on a Alexa Spaanstra goal that tied the score at 1-1.
The Blue Devils will face North Carolina after the teams did not play on the conference roster this season. The last time the teams met in the ACC Championship was in the 2017 Finals, when the Tar Heels beat Duke 1-0.
