Ibrahima Konaté is putting real pressure on Joel Matip at Liverpool, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insidersaid Matip, 30, is first choice alongside Virgil van Dijk but suggested that could change amid Konate’s form.
Matip started against Man United on Tuesday night as Liverpool followed suit in the title race with a 4-0 victory over their rivals.
The Cameroonian returned to the starting XI after Konaté was favored in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Man City.
Konate played for Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2022 and has scored three goals in his last three appearances.
Speaking to club media on Saturday April 16, Klopp praised the defender’s ‘incredibly large’ aerial threat from set pieces.
When asked if Konaté was set to replace Matip as the first choice, Campbell replied Football Insiderby Dylan Childs: “The transition will happen soon.
“Konate is becoming a dominant force in the team.
“His minutes have been limited in the Premier League because Matip is so good. Matip is probably the first choice alongside Van Dijk when everyone is fit but make no mistake, Konate is right there.
“One thing he is good at, he scores goals. He is dangerous in the opposing box and he scores goals. He’s a big boy and he also gives the team a bit more speed at the back.
“I really like him. He’s good with the ball, aggressive and has effect in both boxes. Klopp knows there’s no giving up if he starts. Konaté makes the team even stronger.
