LOS ANGELES, CA — The Loyola Marymount University Lions (0-3-1, 0-0 WCC) clashed with the No. 20 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos for most of the night, but unfold in the visiting half of the eighth and ninth proved to be the difference in an 18-7 loss on Tuesday night.
The Lions trailed by one point after the first half, but quickly regained the lead with a Devan Ornelas double to center right for LMU’s first score of the night followed by Ornelas scoring on wild pitch by Gauchos starter JD Callahan.
LMU gave up the lead in the third but fought back to fire in the two runs late in the fourth off the stick from Diego Baqueiro. Baqueiro doubled to the left, the first of his two hits, bringing a pair making the game at that time 7-5.
Heading into the home half of the sixth, the Lions dropped three and pushed two on a sacrifice fly from Benny Casillas and a single from Brett Zimmerman.
The score remained the same after seven full innings, but late runs scored in the eighth and ninth by the Gauchos proved too much for the Lions to overcome.
LMU continues its 11-game home season with a three-weekend series against the Creighton University Bluejays with a first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25and.
