IPL 2022: ‘Future captain Ravindra Jadeja should have been involved in mega-auction: ex-CSK all-rounder

On Sunday, Chennai Super Kings veteran MS Dhoni highlighted his new visit to the captaincy with an easy win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Dhoni, who led the franchise to four IPL titles, was in charge of business again after Ravindra Jadeja ventured out mid-season.

Dhoni said Ravindra Jadeja’s overall form seemed to have had an impact on his game, prompting the change of captain. Curiously, Dhoni had left the captaincy two days before the start of the tournament, and his return raises questions about the team’s decision-making when it comes to finding the right skipper.

Inconsistent decision-making is a surprising factor for me: Irfan Pathan

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was a member of the Chennai team in 2015, praised the work of the team’s management. Either way, he accepts that Jadeja should have been part of the auction assuming Dhoni had previously chosen to hand over the reins to the all-rounder.

“Of course I was surprised (by CSK’s decision). They made Jadeja the captain just two days before the start of this year’s IPL… which was also a surprise. Because if Dhoni had decided to leave the captaincy, the future captain Jadeja should have been involved in the auction.

“If Dhoni’s exit was a last minute decision, that means Jadeja was not involved in the auction. And Jadeja is captain for the first time despite having played in the IPL for years” , Irfan told Jatin Sapru on the latter’s YouTube channel.

“Chennai Super Kings is one of the best franchises as they take good care of their players. Every player in the team remains equal for this franchise. Inconsistent decision making is a surprising factor for me,” he added.

I want to see how Ravindra Jadeja the player performs this season: Irfan Pathan

Irfan further stated that the franchise spent too much money on Ravindra Jadeja as they felt he should be part of the main pack. Jadeja was the No. 1 retailer in Chennai for ₹16 crore, followed by Dhoni for ₹12 crore, ahead of February’s mega auction.

“He was held up in front of Dhoni. CSK had thought about investing in him as the No. 1 retention because they wanted him to be a captain as well. Rashid Khan did not stay at Sunrisers Hyderabad as he was not the first choice retention.

“Even though it’s his own decision to quit, Jadeja should have spoken with the franchise. Ruturaj also didn’t play in the first games of the season. But he was supported by the team management.

“Jadeja should also have continued. Maybe he would have had 2-3 wins and his confidence would have skyrocketed. But I want to see how Jadeja the player fares this season after his captaincy exit” he added again.

The four-time champions will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at MCA, Pune on May 4 (Wednesday).
