How Hotel Il Pellicano’s Timeless Dolce Vita Stays Current

Equal shares each collaborator, design studio based in London Campbell Rey has teamed up again with the Swedish carpet company Nordic knots create an exclusive piece for each piece of Tuscany Hotel Il Pellicano. The resulting design, Trellisfeels both timeless and fresh, while paying homage to this legendary property, famously immortalized by photographer Slim Aarons.

How do you create something that is both timeless and contemporary? Liza Laserow and Fabian Berglund, Nordic Knots): We believe in being true to ourselves – we must truly love what we create and we never try to set or follow a trend. We have so many different sources of inspiration that our designs are constantly evolving over time.

Where do you get your fabrics, materials and dyes? Our wool is sourced from New Zealand and Europe and is woven into rugs by highly skilled artisan weavers in Bhadohi, India.

What makes Hotel II Pellicano unique and what excites you about this establishment? There’s this enduring magic about Hotel Il Pellicano – its rich history, its location, and the way it continues to innovate. Once there, you won’t want to leave.

What’s your favorite hidden spot in the hotel? The terracotta colored buildings against the backdrop of the Tuscan hills are magical. And the gardens, one feels a great calm while walking between the cypresses and the pines.

You have traveled the world for your work. What are the most inspiring cities or monuments you have encountered and why? New York is our number one love and will forever be the most inspiring place for us. It never fails to reach you where you need it most and give you something you didn’t know you were looking for.

What’s always in your suitcase and why? Black and white clothing only, plus a pair of vintage Levis.

Lisa: I never travel without my jewelry box.

What were your references and inspirations for the design and colors?Charlotte Rey, Campbell-Rey: The design is called Trellis and was inspired by the Gustavian scrollwork floral designs of Sweden, where Nordic Knots is based. We’ve updated the colors, inspired by the rich terracotta hues of Hotel Il Pellicano’s exterior, as well as the deep greens of the rosemary bushes in its gardens.

How do you create something that is both timeless and contemporary?Duncan Campbell, Campbell-Rey: We follow our instincts towards something that looks seductive and elegant yet practical. And we always try to include something that seems unexpected.

What makes Hotel Il Pellicano unique and what excites you about this establishment? Charlotte: We are passionate about everything about this hotel and believe that is what makes it legendary. It’s not just the beautiful location, the delicious food, the gorgeous gardens and the instinctive service, it’s something very special that Marie-Louise Sciò and her family bring. The French call it I do not know whatand when you’ve found it, you know it.

What’s your favorite hidden spot in the hotel? Duke: At the bar with the master bartender Federico Morosi who prepares you a very cold martini.

Interiors and spaces tell a story – what is the story you want to tell? Charlotte: We want to invite people to enjoy life and live well, have fun and be entertained comfortably.

You have traveled the world for your work. What are the most inspiring cities or monuments you have encountered and why? Duke: We are both madly in love with Italy and the Italian way of life. Each city has its own personality and fascinating monuments.

What’s always in your suitcase and why? Duke: I never go anywhere without my sketchbook and pencils. When inspiration hits you, you need to be ready.

Charlotte: I always travel with a very beautiful cocktail dress. Who knows what nightfall might bring.

What made Campbell-Rey and Nordic Knots designs a perfect fit for an Italian hideaway? Marie-Louise Sciò, Hotel Il Pellicano: I was immediately drawn to the vine design. The foliage reminded me of Tuscany, while the warm sienna and cotton hues feel authentic to Il Pellicano. The design captures the experience of holiday bliss.

What makes Hotel Il Pellicano unique and what excites you about this establishment? So many things make Il Pellicano unique: its history, the destination, the passion that everyone puts into making the service impeccable.

What’s your favorite hidden spot in the hotel? I love the stairs down to the beach.

Interiors and spaces tell a story. What is the story you want to tell the hotel? I want to create a dialogue between the past and the present. Over the years, we have improved the hotel and made it more contemporary, while trying to retain its original look.

You have traveled the world for your work. What are the most inspiring cities or monuments you have encountered and why? It must be Patagonia and Lapland; I love being outdoors and enjoying the beauty that surrounds us.

What’s always in your suitcase and why? Many things! Headphones because I always listen to music. A cashmere scarf, so I can stay comfortable when needed. A white T-shirt, it is versatile and essential. And stilettos, because a woman never knows!
