Charlize Theron and Alfonso Cuarón prepare Philip K. Dick biopic

A project, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is currently underway for a bizarre biopic of a prolific sci-fi writer. Philip K. Dick. Written by the daughter of the author and Amazon screenwriter and producer, isa hacketthe film is currently working under the title Joan, named after Dick’s twin sister who died just six weeks after his birth. Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Alfonso Cuaron are, at the moment, only exploited to produce, but the Amazon project is being worked with both in mind, with Theron as the lead and Cuarón to direct.

In order to tell the fantastic and true story of his father’s life, Hackett wrote Joan as a “genre-bending” storyline that will tell the author’s story in a deeply personal way. Just six weeks after the birth of Dick and his twin sister, Jane, the little girl died in infancy. The loss affected the author in such a profound way that the absence of his sister plagued his existence throughout his life and influenced his work. His daughter, wanting to honor her father’s memory in a way that complements his extraordinary legacy, chose to write a biopic through Jane’s eyes.

Hackett detailed the thinking behind his script and how his father’s life will be told in an alternate reality, similar to those he himself created and sometimes lived in:

“The story of Joan has been with me for as long as I can remember. Jane, my father’s twin sister who died a few weeks after his birth, was at the center of his universe. Befitting a man of his unique imagination, this film will defy biopic conventions and embrace the alternate reality that Philip K. Dick so desperately desired – one in which his beloved sister survived beyond six weeks. . It is his story that we will tell, his lens through which we will see him and his imagination. There’s no better way to honor him than to grant his wish, if only for the screen.

Forty years after Dick’s death in 1982, the author’s peculiar life is examined in a whole new way. A handful of his work has been adapted for the screen over the years, including sci-fi paragons blade runner and Total recall, but last year the man himself was the subject of interest. In June, it was announced that a biopic, only seemingly realis currently in its infancy with Air Force Onethe producer Jon Shestack, but that at the time, the project had not yet found its director or its cast. While Hackett’s film will portray his father from a rather unique angle, Shestack’s storyline opts for the more traditional biopic style.

Actress Theron is set to produce the film and is best known for her roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and as a convicted serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Freak, which won him an Oscar. Theron’s work spans genres from action to Fast and Furious deductible and Atomic Blondelike science fiction Prometheus, Aeon Stream and his final appearance in Disney’s MCU in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. As a producer, Theron is attached to Netflix The old guard, Atomic blonde, freak and more. Theron as the lead in Joan hasn’t been confirmed, but considering she’s starred in nearly every movie she’s produced, that’s certainly not out of the question.

Cuarón, who is also on board to produce, is a veteran, multi-Oscar-winning writer, producer and filmmaker. He is best known for his breathless drama Gravity featuring Sandra Bullock and George Clooneyas good as children of men and 2016 Rome, all of which he wrote and directed. One of Cuarón’s first films, spectacularly magical from 1995 A little princess earned the director two Academy nominations, before later directing a fan-favorite film in the Harry Potter franchise Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
