50-State Study: The Impact of Climate Change in New Mexico is the Rio Grande

The latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is another reminder of the disastrous effects of climate change. While climate projections often look to the future when discussing the worst impacts of climate change, we are in fact already experiencing its effects across the United States. To better understand the impact of climate change on the country, Stacker has compiled a list of climate change impacts in each state, using local and national news reports, government reports and scientific journal articles.

Although these impacts are related to weather patterns (e.g. heat waves, droughts or storms), individual weather events cannot be attributed to climate change alone. Rather, it is when these events are observed as part of larger trends that they can be understood as part of a pattern resulting from climate change.

Across the country, there are trends of rising temperatures, storms of increasing frequency and severity, and more erratic rainfall patterns, causing disruptions to food systems and sometimes even deaths. While the US government has set itself the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030, it is clear that the climate emergency is already underway and, alongside the reduction emissions, mitigating the impacts of climate change must be a priority. good.
